Ecommerce platforms for freelancers: four routes to compare

We may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page. How we make money

Independent research by SoloOps Stack. This is an affiliate-supported, documentation-based shortlist, not a hands-on award or a universal ranking.

The useful question is not “Which platform has the most features?” It is “Which setup fits the way I want to sell, and what will I need to manage?”

Below are four different routes: a dedicated hosted store, a funnel-and-course-led setup, an open-source WordPress store, and another commerce platform with volume-based plan rules. Those descriptions reflect the official sources cited in each section.

How we made the shortlist

We assessed the published information against five questions:

  1. Offer fit: is the project a product catalogue, a focused offer or a course?
  2. Store workflow: what do the official documents say about orders, products and delivery?
  3. Cost clarity: what is the billing term, currency and starting commitment?
  4. Limits: what could trigger an upgrade or a separate fee?
  5. Operational fit: what setup and ongoing responsibilities should a solo operator investigate?

The order below is not a score or a claim that the first platform is best for everyone. Recommendations are editorial judgements against these criteria. We have not tested performance, customer support or sales outcomes.

Shopify: consider it for a dedicated product shop

Shopify's official description covers storefronts, product and inventory management, payments, orders and shipping. Commerce hosting is included. S1

Published entry point: Basic is US$39/month on monthly billing or US$29/month equivalent with yearly billing on the US page. The UK page lists £25 GBP/month, or £19 GBP/month equivalent with yearly billing. These are regional prices, not currency conversions. S1 S2

Why we would shortlist it: the documented store workflow makes it a relevant starting point when the shop is the core project, rather than an addition to a course or campaign. S1

Tradeoff: subscription cost is only part of the decision. Shopify publishes payment-processing rates and potential third-party transaction fees, and some features vary by country. Check your payment setup rather than assuming one headline price covers everything. S1 S2

Systeme.io: consider it for funnels, courses and focused offers

Systeme.io's published plans combine sales funnels, email sending and online courses. Its official help centre also documents selling physical products through funnel order forms, including stock and variant setup. It is therefore not accurate to describe it as digital-only. S3 S4

Published entry point: a Free plan at US$0; paid monthly plans are Startup US$17, Webinar US$47 and Unlimited US$97. The currency is USD in the official pricing page's structured data. These figures are not verified GBP subscription prices. S3

Why we would shortlist it: a freelancer whose offer depends on a sales funnel, email sequence and course may want to evaluate those tools together. That is an editorial fit judgement based on the documented scope. S3

Tradeoff: Free has capacity limits, including 2,000 contacts, 3 sales funnels and 1 course, and official documentation states a US$10,000 lifetime sales cap before upgrading is required to keep accepting payments. This is a plan restriction, not a prediction of results. For physical products, Systeme.io says the merchant remains responsible for shipping and fulfilment. S3 S5 S4

WooCommerce: consider it for a WordPress-based store

WooCommerce describes its core product as a free, open-source ecommerce platform for WordPress, with no monthly core platform subscription. Hosting, optional extensions and payment processing are separate parts of the cost model. S6

Published entry point: the core software is free. That is not a claim that operating the complete store costs nothing. WooCommerce's own pricing explanation separates the host, extensions and processor from the core product. S6

Why we would shortlist it: it is worth investigating if you already work with WordPress and want to choose your hosting and additional components rather than start with a bundled subscription. The product's WordPress and modular-cost model support that recommendation. S6

Tradeoff: our advice is to cost the whole setup and decide who will handle maintenance, backups and troubleshooting. A free core licence is not enough information to estimate the cost of your particular store.

No numerical hosting estimate is used here: it would not be a quote for your requirements.

BigCommerce: consider it if its commerce setup and plan rules fit

BigCommerce's current plan names are Core, Growth, Scale and Performance. Its official pricing page describes commerce capabilities including real-time shipping quotes and multi-storefront options; check which plan and any extra charges apply before relying on a particular capability. S7

Published entry point: Core is US$39/month on monthly billing or US$29/month equivalent with annual billing. The vendor states that its listed prices are in USD and exclude tax. S7 S8

Why we would shortlist it: it provides another commerce-focused route to compare against your store requirements. We would pay particular attention to its published upgrade and payment-provider rules before deciding that it fits a solo budget.

Tradeoff: Core has a US$30,000 trailing-twelve-month GMV threshold, above which it upgrades to Growth. BigCommerce defines the relevant GMV using gross order value after a 10% reduction. It also charges Core's 2% Open Payment Provider fee on eligible order GMV; orders actually processed by its listed Embedded Payment Providers are not subject to that fee. Processor charges are separate. Do not read older blanket “no transaction fees” summaries as an all-costs promise. S7 S8

How to narrow this to one useful test

Choose the route that best matches your next real task:

  • Build a dedicated product shop: investigate Shopify and BigCommerce against the same store checklist.
  • Create a focused funnel-and-course offer: investigate Systeme.io's published workflow and limits.
  • Build around WordPress with separately chosen components: investigate WooCommerce's full setup cost.

These are starting hypotheses, not guarantees. Rehearse a product page, a payment, delivery and a refund before committing to a setup. If a must-have is unclear, get confirmation from the vendor rather than assume a similarly named feature does the same thing.

Pricing and research notes

All cited pages were accessed 2026-11-06. Annual equivalents are not month-to-month prices. Shopify USD and GBP figures come from different regional pages; Systeme.io and BigCommerce figures are USD only here. WooCommerce's free core does not include a complete operating-cost quote. No currency conversions, introductory offers or unverified discounts are used.

Outbound product links in these pages are direct official URLs, not approved affiliate tracking links. Affiliate enrolment and the eventual link destinations remain publication prerequisites.
